Yarra Issues

We have decided that concrete victories for ordinary people in Yarra are the most important goals.

  1. Young People
1500 local youth are outside education, training and employment, many others are trapped in low paid casual jobs or struggling through school without enough support. Stephen chairs the new Youth Advisory Committee on Council aiming to find ways to improve the amount, quality and delivery of youth services in Yarra, as well as organising local young people to be involved in the discussion. Proposals from this Committee will be debated on Council in June. If you are a student or teacher and want someone from this Committee to visit your school or young persons organisation, contact Stephen Jolly now.

  2. Stopping Banco
The fight to stop the horrendous Banco development on Smith St and the related issue to working out a community-endorses alternative plan for the area is a huge local issue. See 'Councillors Diary' section of this web page for all the details and latest news.

  3. Transport
We are working with a range of organisations to fight the road lobby and get Council to be more militant on this question. Again, see the 'Councillors Diary' section of this web page for all the details and latest news.

  4. Child Care
There are over 600 families on the waiting list for a child care place in Yarra. We are helping local people mobilise (as happened successfully in Port Phillip) to get more Council resources for child care so the waiting lists are reduced. As their slogan goes "Just Fix It!" Once again, see the 'Councillors Diary' section of this web page for all the details and latest news.

  5. Casualisation
We need a Council that sets an example and has permanent or permanent part-time staff, not the insecurity of causal work. We need Council to use its leverage over licences premises in Yarra to ensure they adhere to at the very least the minimum health and safety and industrial laws. This is an issue SP will raise on Council.
