Imperialism and illusions related to European Union membership

"LIFE, LIBERTY, and the Pursuit of Happiness." This is supposedly what the dream of America offers, but does this hold true for the 35.9 million Americans living in poverty today, according to the 2004 U.S. Census Bureau report?

"IT IS a mess in Iraq". The UN special envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, was certainly to the point. Elections, he said, would not be possible on the 30 January "if the circumstances stay as they are".
Scottish socialist Party (SSP) members were stunned to learn of the resignation of Tommy Sheridan as national convenor of the party on Wednesday 10 November.

New allegations of voting irregularities
Tom Crean, Socialist Alternative, CWI in the US
In the end, Bush won a clear majority of the popular vote and there was not a repeat of the disputed outcome of the 2000 election. However, this does not mean that American democracy has been “fixed” since the Florida debacle four years ago. Recall that in that election, Gore won the national popular vote and only lost because the Supreme Court refused to allow a full recount of the Florida vote. Many independent observers are convinced that a recount would have given Gore the victory but Florida’s governor Jeb Bush and an army of Republican lawyers were determined to stop this happening. In the end, Bush took office as a result of a “cold coup”.
Democrats’ failure shows need for new workers’ party

Tens of millions of people in the US are deeply dismayed at the victory of George W. Bush and the Republicans and are asking: “How could Bush have won?”

Elections show US workers need their own political voice
There is deep disappointment in Australia, Britain and worldwide at the victory of Bush in the US elections. This, however, does not justify drawing pessimistic conclusions for the future or insulting the US people, as did the London Daily Mirror: "How can 59 million people be dumb enough to vote for this?" Similar conclusions were drawn about the elections in Britain in 1992 when John Major unexpectedly crept back to power, despite the previous forcible eviction of Thatcher from office and the defeat of the hated poll tax. Six months after Major's re-election came 'Black Wednesday' and the collapse of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) which sealed the fate of the Tories, from which they have never recovered.
The Democratic Socialist Perspective group in Australia have long supported the ex-CWI members who dominate the leadership of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). On the other hand our comrades, active in the rank and file of the SSP, have criticised the shift away from an independent socialist analysis by the SSP leadership.
Recent developments have, unfortunately, supported their worst fears...
Economic storms and class battles on the agenda
By Peter Taaffe, Socialist Party, England and Wales
While the world and the British people were preoccupied with the terrorist outrage in North Ossetia, with a worsening economic situation, price rises and the daily struggle to make ends meet, what were the priorities of Tony Blair and his New Labour government?
Today 79% of east Germans and 51% of west Germans think that Socialism is a “good idea” that was “only badly implemented” in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe. That is the judgement after 15 years of capitalist unification. Clearly in the midst of the current determined campaign by the German ruling class to cut living standards the opposition and alienation from capitalism is growing.
The dreams of the US right-wing 'neo-cons' lie in tatters on the battlefields of Iraq. One of the only certainties in the turmoil of Iraq is that imperialism's occupation is doomed to failure.

The siege of Najaf is the latest episode that underlines the fact that neither US Imperialism nor their puppet "Iraqi government" led by Iyad Allawi control Iraq.

The Venezuelan right wing went to great lengths to impose a recall referendum. This included open fraud, such as the inclusion of the signatures of 11,000 who were already dead. There were 10,500 signatures which appeared either 3 times or more and those individuals are now being prosecuted. Yet, all of this was in vain given that for the eighth time the right-wing were defeated by the workers and those who live in the poor districts.

Across Venezuela hundreds of thousands have celebrated the defeat of the attempt to “recall” the radical President Hugo Chávez. The overwhelming referendum result is a huge blow against US President Bush’s policies and the Venezuelan ruling class. The opposition had hoped that they would be able to mobilise sections disappointed by Chávez and thereby secure a victory.

Although President Bush's approval ratings have reached an all-time low, John Kerry has gained little, according to a CBS/New York Times poll released in late June.
Analyses the current critical conjuncture of the Venezuelan Revolution; takes up the uncritical analsis of President Chevas by some left groups; and offers a socialist programme for the Venezuelan working class.

The ISO in Australia are linked to the SWP in Britain, who have moved away from the Socialist Alliance towards the new 'Respect' organisation. This excellent analysis of Respect and specifically its programme, its opportunism towards right-wing Muslim organisations, as well as their results in last weeks Euro and Council elections in Britain is well worth looking at...

It is said that certain Amazon Indian tribes have developed a wonderfully simple technique of capturing monkeys, high in protein and highly prized. The cage is constructed with a nut inside but designed so that when the monkey grabs the nut its clench fist will be too large to be pulled out of the cage. The hunters simply pick the monkey up and the hunt could not be easier. The point is that despite imminent capture the monkeys cannot let go of the nut.
Ronald Reagan, the B-movie actor who became the 40th president of the USA (1981-88) has died aged 93. Wall Street will stay closed for Reagan‘s state funeral, a salute to the godfather of today‘s stock market bubble.
