Joe Higgins TD explains why he's coming to Australia in August...
Letter to Australia from Joe Higgins TD
Dear Comrades,
I am looking forward to my visit to Australia later this year to attend the Conference of the Socialist Party, the sister Party of the Socialist Party in Ireland, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the CWI.
I will be very interested in hearing of the Socialist Party’s struggles against war, exploitation and racism and in raising consciousness of the socialist alternative.
The Socialist Party in Ireland has recently played a major role in the campaign against the bin tax in Dublin and to maintain domestic refuse collection as a public service financed from central taxation. This campaign saw thousands mobilised and 22 people go to prison. I would like to thank our comrades and friends in Australia who demonstrated outside the Irish consulate in Melbournewhen my Socialist Party colleague Councillor Clare Daly and myself were sent to prison.
Elections to City and County Councils and to the European Parliament are being held in Ireland in June this year. The Socialist Party is standing fourteen candidates for the Councils and is contesting the European Election in Dublin.
I will be able to report at the public meetings I attend on our election campaign and our general work to build the socialist alternative in Ireland North and South.
Finally, I wish our comrades in Australia continued success in campaigning against war, racism, cutbacks of public services, and the exploitation of part-time workers.
Joe Higgins T.D.
