Left Party in Sweden turns to the right in Euro campaign
Wednesday, September 03 @ 19:08:03 CDT

The "No" campaign has a clear lead with less than two weeks to go to the referendum on the euro in Sweden 14 September. Two-thirds of the members of the trade union federation, LO, are supporting a "No" vote, according to opinion polls. The support for the No campaign is high despite the profile of the official "No" leadership, as this article on the Left Party (former Communist Party), shows. The article is published in this week’s issue of Offensiv, the weekly paper of Rättvisepartiet Socialisterna (CWI Sweden).

Wage Labour and Capital and Value, Price and Profit both by Karl Marx
Wednesday, September 03 @ 03:35:49 CDT

How many times has a boss told a shop steward or union rep that if they ask for too big a wage increase then prices will go up? Former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson claimed in the 1960s that: "One man's wage increase is another man's price rise". This is still a common cry from bosses world-wide.
When the national minimum wage was brought in, Britain's bosses again argued that wage rises cause inflation. If the minimum wage was at too high a level, they said, workers would be priced out of jobs, prices would rise and economic meltdown could follow.
Some trade union leaders stressed that a minimum wage had been introduced in other countries - sometimes at a higher level - without this economic Armageddon happening. This was a correct argument but it did not really explain why wage increases do not cause inflation.
If workers want the best arguments to expose the bosses and show that they can demand larger pay rises than are offered without causing economic chaos, then look no further than these two pamphlets from Karl Marx written in the 19th century.

South Korea: The Tiger Strikes
Wednesday, September 03 @ 03:30:10 CDT

South Korea: The Tiger Strikes was commissioned by the Committee for a Workers' International to highlight the significance for the workers' movement worldwide of the dramatic events of December 1996 and January/February 1997. The magnificent general strike exploded onto the front pages of the international press just as a new year was beginning. It rudely awoke the world to the realities of the class struggle being fought out in the land once known as the 'Hermit Kingdom'.

Socialism in the 21st Century:The WayForward for Anti-Capitalism By Hannah Se
Tuesday, September 02 @ 22:02:18 CDT

This book by British SP's Hannah Sell argues the case for socialism. Why are you and other readers interested in such a book? Why are growing numbers of people considering becoming socialists?
It is clearly not because socialism is widely publicised. None of the major political parties are socialist, socialism does not feature on the national curriculum in schools, and the TV is not packed with programs arguing in favor of it. And yet, it clearly isn't. Ideas traditionally associated with the left are increasingly popular.
In a Mori poll in 2001, for example, 72% of people supported the re-nationalisation of the railway system, despite none of the major political parties arguing for it.

"Howard's not invincible" - bourgeois journalist fret over government crisis
Sunday, August 31 @ 19:07:40 CDT

Behind the high polls, the Federal government is directionless with growing anger from ordinary people on Medicare and higher education. Only the uselessness of the Labor Opposition is keeping Howard ahead. This article from Murdoch's Australian (1st September 2003) shows the fear of the more far-sighted bourgeois journalists of a rapid collapse in support for the government.

European Union: Economic and Monetary Union in practice
Wednesday, August 27 @ 03:54:17 CDT

On the 14 September, there will be a referendum in Sweden on joining the EMU and the Euro. The following is an editorial from Marxismen Idag (Marxism Today), the journal of Rättvisepartiet Socialisterna (CWI Sweden). It deals with the real EMU - in stark contrast to the picture of a prosperous and stable euro-zone given by the ‘Yes’ campaign. Since the article was written in June, the French president, Chirac, has openly asked for a softening of the EMU demands on budget deficits.
